CNT 10 Course Outline
Teacher:Mr. Woods
Room: TechLab 125
Overview: Construction Technology 10 is designed to give students a basic understanding of the construction industry, with a concentration on wood framed housing construction. Students will learn how a wood framed home is constructed from start to finish, and will get some experience working with some of the mechanical systems within the home.
Units of Study: The course will be broken into seven units, which are as follows:
Mark Breakdown: The breakdown for this course is as follows:
Unit Percent of Semester Grade
Safety 20%
Measurement and Drawing 10%
Framing 25%
Finishing 10%
Google Sketchup 15%
Carpentry 15%
The semester mark will make up 80% of the final grade, and a final assessment will make up the remaining 20%.
Expectations: All students will be expected to work safely at all times. A lack of care in the shop environment can be extremely dangerous both to the student and his/her classmates. Students who are unable to follow the rules of the shop (as will be laid out in class) will be unable to use the shop, for the safety of themselves and others.
Students should attend class in sensible clothing and shoes. Please ensure that hair is tied back, and nothing dangles loosely (chains or necklaces, earrings, scarves, ties, sleeves, etc)
As this is a very hands-on class, students will need to attend regularly in order to ensure they have every opportunity to achieve the outcomes. Missed opportunities may be made up outside of class time, but it is the student’s responsibility to arrange this time with the teacher.

- Safety – All students will be required to work through the safety unit, and must pass the safety test before they will be allowed to use any tools or machines in the lab.
- Measurement and Drawing – This unit will give a brief tutorial on the use of various measurement tools, as well as an opportunity to gain an understanding of technical drawings.
- Google Sketchup - Students will learn how to use Google Sketchup from following step-by-step instructional assignments to being responsible for creating their own rendering of a house, complete with all the proper components.
- Framing – This is the single largest unit in the course and will take students from the very first stake marking out the foundation line, to the very last shingle nail. Students will learn about the history of wood frame construction and building materials while constructing a scale model, wood-framed house with a group.
